In addition to veterinary clinical studies, Craig Woods has been involved in human clinical studies with Midwestern University, Abrazo Healthcare, ASU and Mayo Clinic. During the COVID 19 outbreak, Dr. Woods participated in three human COVID-19 studies as an investigator or as research director. One study was a national, multi-institutional COVID-19 immunosurveillance study that collected blood samples from over 4,000 healthy and immunocompromised individuals prior to and after exposure to COVID-19 vaccination. Results were published on Aug 20th, 2026 in Cell Press Blue titled “Pre-vaccine sentinel antibodies predict blunted vaccine responses” and featured in Global Biodefense newsletter. The study revealed important insight into predicting the robustness of vaccine response in humans. The study evaluated the humoral response to SARS-CoV-2 and microbial antigens and revealed that broadly prevalent pre-existing antibodies to common microbes were able to consistently predict the post-vaccination antibody responses in both healthy and immunosuppressed populations. This work could provide a practical and feasible framework for predicting vaccine responses before immunization.
